The Pulley Bone, Virginia’s On King!
The Pulley Bone—I had the pleasure of visiting Virginia’s on King again. This made my 3rd or 4th visit to this King St. gem. This visit was a little more special that the others. I was invited out by the Digital Media Manager of Holy City Hospitality, VP. VP told me that there was a new chicken sandwich on the menu that I MUST try. Now I’m here to let everyone know they must try it. I am sitting down writing a story about a chicken sandwich. So, it has to be pretty amazing, right? RIGHT!
It’s 3:54pm on January 13th and VP texts and says “your reservation is at 5pm”. I knew I had a plus one, so I scrambled to find someone to join me. Immediately thought of someone that would enjoy the experience and have great conversation. One of my right-hand guys, Donovan McDaniel. He beat me there lol.
We walked in and were immediately greeted by the host that happened to be the manager. We found that out after a few good conversations awaiting our food. Our server was also pretty knowledgeable about the menu items and sold us the mashed potatoes for a side item. He sold it so well, Donovan and I got the same side of mashed potatoes. Initially, I thought why get two of the same sides lol. He then asked for our drink orders. I initially picked a Lowcountry Lager from Palmetto Brewing Company and he enthusiastically suggested the Hutson Alley Blonde Ale. The Hutson Alley Blonde Ale is a collaboration with Edmund’s Oast and all restaurants in the Hutson Alley. Edmund’s Oast is definitely one of my favorite breweries in Charleston, so I had to go with it. We both got one and its bomb.
Back to the chicken. This was a different chicken sandwich. It’s called the Pulley Bone Special on the menu. Again, this was no ordinary chicken sandwich. Most sandwiches are made from the chicken breast. The pulley bone is the top portion of the chicken breast but the cut is perpendicular, leaving the pulley bone or wish bone inside.
The sandwich comes out and its beautiful. Let’s talk about buns. The buns of a sandwich are so underrated. It really makes or breaks a meal for me. There have been times where I’d just take the bun off. They bun was perfect for the crispy, but juicy and golden chicken sandwich. The sandwich does come plain so I asked for a side of mayo. Now I’m going back and forth between the sandwich and the mashed potatoes, by the way, were so creamy and good.
Mid meal, we were greeted by the chef. That was the cherry on top for me. He made sure everything was perfect, and they were indeed. I’m a huge fan of good service. In all my times visiting Virginia’s On King, the service was superb. We were able to talk a little about the history of the restaurant and some of the paintings in the space.
Me sharing my experiences with Donovan about Virginia’s On King has made him a fan. The server made us make a promise to him that we will come back and try the new pot pie on the menu. I told him it was a deal. We will definitely be back and I encourage all my subscribers to make a visit, as well.
